Ready to rock that naturally grey mane? Perfect timing, since it couldn’t be more on trend. The only setback: it can be hard not to feel discouraged while you wait for your strands to turn the perfect shade of salt and pepper. “It’s important to turn to an expert,” says Caroline Verreault, Matrix Education Leader for Quebec and the Maritimes. Here are her tips.

Going salt and pepper

The past few years have seen a trend where even young girls are wearing their hair grey. Naturally, the fad has launched a movement with those who have naturally grey strands. That being said, “there is no miracle recipe for going back to your natural hair colour,” warns Caroline Verreault.

Two options to consider

* Go cold turkey: Stop dyeing your hair, arm yourself with a lot of patience, and experiment with accessories like bandanas, hats, and scarves. Pinterest is a gold mine when it comes to finding inspiration.

* Try a gentler strategy: Ease the transition by choosing a shade that is closer to grey. This will be easier if you’re blonde, whereas brunettes will need to take a more gradual approach. It’s important to note that this type of change may also call for some wardrobe tweaks. And that, ladies, is the perfect excuse for a shopping spree

4 rules for going grey without getting discouraged

Let’s be honest: going natural isn’t an easy process. But that doesn’t mean you need to bid your stylist farewell. On the contrary! It’s important to know that hair grows about 1 cm per month. That means it could take from one-and-a-half to two years to get your mane to a nice bob length, depending on how fast your hair grows. Follow these tips to avoid getting discouraged:

*Get your hair trimmed regularly every two to three months. Why not book your appointments right now? It’ll help you stay motivated.

*Go lighter. Progressively try to get your hair closer to white if you are blonde. If you’re a brunette, start by bleaching your tips to create a nice harmony with your roots. Reverse ombré (lighter roots, darker ends) is a strong trend for 2018, but you still want to avoid looking like a skunk!

*Work the salt and pepper look. It looks sexy on George Clooney, and there is no reason it can’t look great on you, too. Ask your favourite hair accomplice to give you streaks, some lighter and others darker.

*Get inspired. Look up the hashtags #greyhair and #greyhairdontcare on Instagram for extra motivation.

*Concentrate on your hair texture. Hair turns white when it loses its pigmentation. The consequence? Its texture changes, too: it is often rougher, less malleable, and more difficult to style. Keep your strands from looking dull, and maximize shine by ensuring they get loads of moisture.

Try:

*Brass Off Blonde Threesome leave-in cream, which helps give hair back its luster.

Bond Ultim8 sealing treatment, which helps protect your mane, especially if it is coloured.

*Avoid yellow undertones. White hair doesn't contain as many nutrients, its texture is more porous, and it absorbs pollution particles more easily, which are bound to make it look yellow with time. And sporting white and yellow hair is just not an option!

Try:

*So Silver Shampoo from the Matrix Total Results Color Obsessed line, which helps neutralize yellow and brassy tones in white hair.

*Brass Off Shampoo from the Matrix Total Results line, which works on both blonde and brown hair to avoid brassiness.
